Most likely when we think about listening to the story of the birth of Jesus - we probably think about a star and a stable, and angels and shepherds and wisemen … we probably don’t think of someone reading a genealogy of who Jesus is related to. But that’s how Matthew begins his account of Jesus birth! Hardly the kind of thing you’re excited to cosy up by a fire with some hot chocolate and listen to!
But just like we all have a relative or two in our family tree that raise some eyebrows - Jesus does too. And Matthew shows us these colourful characters play an important role in the Christmas story - because they are The Point of the story and remind us of the very purpose of Christmas.
